Joy Iwamoto recently completed the Speech-Language Pathology Essentials program through SDSU Global Campus. Since Joy wasn’t always on the path to becoming a speech-language pathologist, we asked her three questions about her journey.
See how she leveraged SDSU Global Campus’ series of prerequisite courses to prepare for admission into a master’s program.
How did the classes help prepare you for your career in speech-language pathology?
Prior to beginning the masters program, I was an out of background major (Linguistics & Japanese Studies) from UCSD and needed 3 courses to fulfill my prerequisite requirements. The courses that I took were principles of audiology, aural rehabilitation, and differences and disorders in children. Through these courses, I learned how broad the field of SLP truly is and the importance of cultural competence that was further reinforced throughout the MA program.
What was your favorite part of your online program?
Even though the courses were asynchronous, the professors provided students, like myself, the opportunity to collaborate and learn from others via discussion boards and projects. Hearing the perspectives of others was invaluable as we all obtained a variety of experiences. Considering that the field of SLP is small and that the other students may be my future colleagues, the courses were a great way to enter the field knowing and learning from others.
What would you say to someone who is considering taking SLPE courses with SDSU Global Campus?
I could not express enough how wonderful the SLPE courses are whether you need to take one or all of the courses. The courses are quick (8 weeks), but I still felt as though I learned a lot about each respective topic. The professors are supportive and look out for your best interest as you embark on your SLP journey.
