You’ve always wanted to learn a new language, but between work, family, and life’s other obligations, it’s been tough to find the time. This summer, you have the perfect opportunity to dive headfirst into language learning through SDSU’s LARC (Language Acquisition Resource Center) Summer Intensive Program.

“It only takes six weeks for students to learn and utilize their language effectively and immediately,” said LARC’s Director of Programs Dr. Shahnaz Ahmadeian. “Learning language successfully comes through having to communicate real meaning and we provide our students ample opportunities to use and communicate the language in a meaningful way.”

Through LARC, you’ll join students from all ages and backgrounds who share your passion for language and culture in a hybrid learning format. The program offers courses in Arabic, Chinese, or Portuguese taught by expert faculty from SDSU’s outstanding language departments.

Three in-person sessions in Arabic, Chinese, and Portuguese held at SDSU begin June 17 and run through August, so register soon for the session that best fits your summer schedule.

Why SDSU’s Language Acquisition Resource Center (LARC)?

To ensure you get the most out of your summer learning, SDSU-LARC uses research-based design and delivery of language and culture programs, teacher professionalization, and assessment to foster an effective learning environment.

SDSU-LARC believes that:

  • Less commonly taught languages are an integral part of world language education.
  • Language teaching and learning are fundamental activities to a globally engaged and culturally aware society.
  • Meaningful community engagement is essential to our work.
  • Facilitating the transition from K-12 to postsecondary education is vital for the development of professionals ready to contribute on an international scale.

Benefits of SDSU’s LARC Summer Intensive Program include:

  • SDSU is the only local university offering Arabic, Chinese, and Portuguese courses through an intensive summer format.
  • You can earn 3-20 units of foreign language credit.
  • Our accessible hybrid format allows you to finish four to five units in under three weeks per individual course.

Expert Instructors

SDSU-LARC’s staff comprises a diverse, multilingual team that collaborates with partners on and off campus to promote and engage in language teaching and learning practice, policy, and research.

“We teach the classes in a real immersion sense,” said Dr. Chris Brown, SDSU-LARC co-director. “Classes are conducted in the target language; 90% or more from day one.”

Expert instructors guide you in achieving practical language skills and cultural awareness through conversations, games, writing, multimedia, and other activities based on today’s latest language learning theories and practices.

Who Should Enroll?

  • Students who want to complete their foreign language requirements in a fast, intensive format.
  • Heritage speakers who want to improve their formal language skills.
  • Highly educated professionals interested in a challenging academic pursuit.
  • Business, legal, and healthcare professionals who want to expand their marketability within their field by adding linguistic knowledge and capacity to their repertoire.

How it Works

Each intensive language and culture studies class meets for four to six hours of interactive instruction daily so that you’ll be completely immersed in your chosen language. While it may sound taxing, the dynamic instructors make it incredibly engaging.

As the weeks progress, you’ll be amazed at your rapidly developing skills in reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension. What once seemed impossible is now well within your grasp thanks to this full-immersion approach. You’re gaining not just linguistic skills, but a broader understanding and appreciation for the people and societies connected to the language.

When the program concludes, you’ll be fluent in your new language and hungry to continue exploring. The cross-cultural connections you’ve made will last a lifetime. Plus, you’ll have received SDSU credit that can apply towards a degree.
