Post-pandemic, the educational world took a significant pivot towards online learning. Today, approximately 54% of college students take one or more of their classes online, and about a quarter of students take classes exclusively online.
The allure of online courses is strong, but it might intimidate those who worry about balancing class with full-time jobs. As daunting as it may seem, with the right program and resources, it is not only possible to go to college and work, but you can also do it while maintaining your sanity.
SDSU’s online degree programs are tailored to meet the needs of individuals balancing full-time employment with their educational aspirations. We emphasize lifelong learning while embracing a student-centered approach to everything we do. This allows students to study on their own schedule, while keeping up with work, family, and other commitments.
As the primary SDSU entity responsible for expanding access to SDSU’s programs to learners around the world, we plan to shape a future where learning opportunities are boundless. The online schooling format serves as an affordable and accessible catalyst for professional and personal development.
We have real success stories of students who have worked through our programs while maintaining full-time careers.
Business student Michael Sedberry shares his story. He said, “While working on my Associate’s degree, I was concerned about how I would pursue a Bachelor’s given my full-time work schedule. This program offered exactly what I needed– the opportunity to earn a degree from a respected institution, all while maintaining the flexibility to study from home.”
Most of our programs are entirely online, meaning you can work at any time you would like. Some programs do require a small in-person component, but with a structured schedule and advanced planning, there should be no worry about attending these sessions.
The asynchronous course schedule means you can complete your schooling at virtually any time of the day. Some programs do require a synchronous portion, but with working professionals in mind, you should have no problem attending these sessions.
The benefits of online schooling are extensive. Reduced costs, personalized education, self-paced learning, and career advancement are just a few advantages of remote learning.
You can truly do it all – be a parent, a student, and an employee all at the same time. Angel Vargas, Civil Engineering student agrees. “With also being a parent, I now have the time to be part of my children’s lives, which is most important to me. Without this Global Campus Program at SDSU, it would have been impossible to attend a university full-time on-campus, work a full-time job, and take my children to school – all in a single day.”
To further ease your worries about time management with school and work, here are some foolproof ways to ensure smooth sailing through your program.
Create a structured schedule and stick to it. Google Calendar, Apple Calendar, or an old-fashioned paper calendar will be your best friend. Jot down everything in your life to ensure you stay organized and up-to-date with your classes, assignments, and work schedule.
Ask for help. Seeking help from your friends, family, and peers is crucial for success. Utilizing your resources also makes life so much easier. We have an entire page on our website dedicated to student support. From advisors to workshops to SDSU resources, we have you covered with any aid you may need.
Lastly, take care of yourself. You are your number one priority, and it is impossible to succeed without fueling your brain and body. Take rest when you need it, eat healthy food, stay active, and make sure you sustain a fulfilling life outside of your school and work.
