Regulatory Affairs is a multidisciplinary field that involves the regulation and development of products mainly in the medical field. The most well-known example of a field where regulatory affairs professionals work is at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and its international counterparts. Regulatory science professionals are currently in high demand globally as they help ensure medical devices and other medical products are safe for people to use. 
We asked one of these professionals, SDSU Global Campus Master of Science in Regulatory Affairs graduate Khairi Darweesh, all about his experience with the program. His story is an incredible example of the career development that can come from higher education.
1. What was the most valuable lesson you learned during your time with Global Campus?
“The most valuable lesson I learned was how to think critically about regulatory strategy in a global context. Regulations are not just rules, they are frameworks that protect patients and guide innovation. Learning to interpret and apply them across different regions taught me adaptability and gave me confidence to navigate complex challenges.”
2. Were there any standout instructors or classes that helped to shape your educational experience?
“Most of the professors/instructors in the program are leaders in their fields, and I am deeply grateful to all of them for sharing their knowledge and many years of expertise. At the very beginning, enrolling in the program was a challenge since my undergraduate degree was from abroad. It would have been very difficult without the efforts and guidance of Ms. Ana Righellis, and I am sincerely thankful for her support. After my enrollment, every instructor and facilitator demonstrated a genuine commitment to helping me and other students succeed, creating an environment where learning was encouraged and supported.”
“Although I found value in every course, the one that stood out the most for me was R A701-01: Regulatory Intelligence/Regulatory Strategy. This course closely aligned with my current role, and I have been able to apply the same principles and strategies directly in my work. It reinforced my ability to think strategically about regulatory pathways and strengthened my confidence in making informed decisions in my professional environment.”
3. What was your strategy for overcoming any struggles or hardships that you faced during the program?
“Balancing full-time work with graduate study required careful planning and commitment. My strategy centered on effective time management, remaining disciplined, and staying organized. I often reminded myself that time would pass whether I completed the assignments or not, so the only way to achieve success was to continue studying and learning. Keeping my long-term goals in mind motivated me to persevere through challenges and remain focused on completing the program.”
4. How did your experience with SDSU Global Campus prepare you for your job as a Regulatory Affairs Specialist?
“My experience with SDSU Global Campus provided me with the technical expertise and strategic mindset necessary to excel in regulatory affairs. The program strengthened my ability to interpret regulatory guidance, develop compliance strategies, and communicate effectively with cross-functional teams. These skills not only prepared me for my role as a Regulatory Affairs Specialist but also positioned me for advancement. Recently, I was promoted to Global Product Stewardship Expert, a role in which I continue to apply the principles and strategies I learned throughout the program. The education I received has been instrumental in my career growth and in my ability to contribute at a global level.”
5. What advice would you give to anyone who’s on the fence about going back to school?
“My advice is to invest in your future. Returning to school may feel overwhelming, but the SDSU program is designed to support working professionals. The knowledge, confidence, and career opportunities that result from the program far outweigh the initial hesitation.
