What is the Difference Between Medical Assistants and Billing and Coding Specialists?

Medical assistants primarily interact with patients. Medical assistants must feel comfortable communicating with others, from scheduling appointments to interviewing patients and measuring their vitals.

Although medical assistants and billing/coding specialists typically work together, they sometimes have different roles.

While both roles work within healthcare administration, billing and coding specialists hone in on numerically categorizing patient records and information. You will also conduct audits, manage insurance claims, track payments, and submit data to insurance providers. You will essentially act as the liaison between insurers, healthcare offices, and patients.

Completing our CMAA with Medical Billing and Coding online training program can show employers that you have all the expected skills of a CMAA plus more. Having these additional skills will increase your career opportunities.

What Can I Do Upon Completing this Program?

With the job outlook expected to grow 14% in the next eight years, now is the prime time to become a medical assistant.

As a medical assistant, you’re essentially the first person someone sees as they approach the clinic, hospital, or physician’s office. You’ll handle administrative duties like file maintenance, scheduling, and vendor and patient correspondence.

The median salary for a medical assistant is $38,720 annually. You will learn various skills in our online training program through hands-on instruction. This program can help you exceed the expectations of the average medical assistant.
